Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Thank you all for a wonderful year, I have made some really great friends, that started out as my customers, and now are so treasured, by me.  I got three of the greatest birds ever into my store a couple of weeks ago.  A umbrella cockatoo, a double yellow headed amazon, and a goffin cockatoo.  Amy and I, along with many customers have absolutely fell in love with Cher a year and half old umbrella cockatoo.  She loves to snuggle and chat with you.  I am very tempted to keep her for the store, as she has worked her way into my heart so much.  She can be a stinker though, loves to get into mischief, when my back is turned.  She has ruint two of my calculators, by pulling out and chewing up the bottons, chewed up several of my markers and pens lol.  and then looks at you with her big huge eyes like she is so innocent of the distruction.

I am hand feeding some of the most beautiful cockatiels I have ever seen or had.  They should be completely weaned in a couple of weeks, and they are very sweet babies, so come see them as well.
Well pardon the grammar, as well as punctuation etc.  I usually write late at night after a long day at the pet shop lol, and my brain went to sleep an hour ago.  Just wanted to send you all my wishes for merry, happy holidays, and give your pets a hug from me too.  Karen

I think if I blink, Christmas will be here.

Christmas is a busy time of the year for many, including Amy and I at the pet shop.  We are in the process of planning our orders and thought we would share a few things with you.
Baby ferrets will be in our store the first part of December.  Will have a lot of fun with them till they sell, they usually are about 7 -8 weeks old.  We try to get them started on the litter box, and teach them manners ( they are a little nippy at first) .
Hoping to get in more birds, although having problems lately on some of the birds, for one not the breeding season for many kinds.  A lot of breeders have went out of business, or weather conditions have not allowed the normal breeding to be carrying on.  With the cold weather now, do not care to have birds flown in, as they are exposed to cold temps. on the air terminals, so not able to go elsewhere at this time.  I am handfeeding two beautiful African Red Belly babies, that are on two feedings a day now, and close to be weaned.  They are so adorable.
Have quite a few baby cockatiels, oh and the cutest sulcata Tortoises, that have been the fancy of many customers, are still available.  Have expanded some in the reptile area, and new additions to the Hampsters, two moms have some adorable babys, will be ready for Christmas.
Brady our Green winged Macaw is looking for a loving home, a great buy on this beautiful sweet bird.
We are closing out all our dog and cat items, at 35% off or more, the month of December will even offer better buys on what is left.  Hoping to expand in the early spring, our building, to allow adding Fish and supplys, and will then plan on having the dog and cat items back, as well as possibly puppys and kittys.
Well until the next post, hoping all of you are doing well.  Karen

wow, I think time got away from me again

Well, guess from not keeping up with the news, you must know by now I am either lazy lol, or swamped with things going on.
I prefer to be thought of as busy lol.  So much is going on at Birdie, Bird Pet shop.  I would like to start with Joy, she is working at another place now, do to her moving away.  I have a super great gal, who is a wonderful addition to Birdie Bird Pet Shop.  AMY is invaluable to my business.
BIRDIE BIRD PET SHOP is celebrating on August 11th, one year in business.  Please come in, and help us to make it a great time for all, sales through out the store. And don't forget to fish out of our fish bowl prizes.
We have new reptiles, and just got in some new birds, and the best bird to date, is a beautiful green wing Macaw, but it will be held like our other big birds, for thirty days, and won't be able to leave for a new home till August 31st.  He is absolutely beautiful.  Hope to follow up with a picture or two for you to see.
He will not be sold to anyone with tiny children, or a couple expecting to have babies.  I have lost a customer to my policy, would like to explain why I have it.  These Macaws, may be sweethearts and most of them are, but if they have a bad hair day, and bite, can do major damage to a child's fingers, or other bodily parts.  Most of them are loving birds, love to be cuddled etc. but I can't just let them go to to a home where they could cause a situation that could be horrible for the family.  Soooooooooo enough of that, I have many new birds in my store that would make a great family pet.
Hope to see you soon, specials going on for our one year anniversary, AUGUST 11th, thru AUGUST 14th.
Have a great month, and looking forward to seeing ya.
Welcome Amy, your doing so great at the shop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Birds

Sorry been really lax on keeping the blog more current.
We have several new birds in the store, and most on special.  Two really neat birds I would like to mention are Luke a young severe Macaw, and Bobbers, a Double yellow headed female amazon.  They come with their cages and their toys etc.  Come check them out.  Today we will be getting three sweeties, two and half month old green cheeks ( they are adorable and very loving)  and a beautiful hand tamed love bird.  All just weaned two weeks ago, hand fed and doing great.  Hope you are enjoying the weather, now that spring looks like it is finally here.  Karen

A Great home I am sure.

One of my favorite birds ( a young Mexican Redhead Amazon)  and loved by many customers in our store, has found a home with two really great people, today.  I watched this bird immediately fall in love with them in a short period of time that they were in our store.  She was such a sweet bird, and interacted with almost everyone, but more so with them.  We still have some other birds that are also little sweeties, that sure would be happy to find a good home too.  So if your looking for a wonderful pet, come see us.  Have a great special right now on many of the birds, including all of our conures till the end of the month are $100.00 of their orriginal price.  Karen

TIME FLYS

Well the holidays flew by, and was so darn busy never got to tell everyone happy holidays, and happy New Year, guess I can say happy belated holidays lol.  Schatzi, was sold to a great couple, I know she will be so very happy there with them.  Good news is that they already owned a male blue and gold macaw, so from following up on her, sounds like she also has a boy friend.
I have really been pleased with all the familys that bought birds during the holidays, love the fact that each one went to special homes.
Before Christmas, I purchased baby ferrets, sold all but two, and they are so sweet.  Will be running them on a great sale next week.
I am down some on my inventory, working on replacing all, and then some, hope to be caught back up in the next week or so.
Want to say thanks to all those wonderful customers that helped to make it really a great Christmas at Birdie Bird Pet Shop, thanks for support in my business.
Will be adding some more to the blog, hopefully this weekend.  Karen

A brand new bird at your home.

Wow, you purchased a bird, and your so excited.  You can't wait to interact with your new friend.  Buttttttttttttttt..........  stop, take a deep breath, and slow down.
Your bird is possibly in a new cage, new toys etc. new home, new people, and could very well be scared.  Give your bird some time to adjust, and to trust you.  Each bird is different, some can adjust in a day or two, others take much more time.  While your giving your bird some space, go up to cage and talk to it from time to time.  Then watch and see if it appears to be scared.  They can act like they are cold, with feathers puffed out, and a quivering may take place.  I like to cover my bird at night.  I use a sheet.  I feel it gives them a sence of security, and also tones down the lights, if you aren't in bed at same time.  Speaking of sleeping, birds need around ten hours a day or night to sleep.
Ok, offer your bird a treat, and hope that it comes to you and takes it.  If not try again some other time.
Keep your children from poking their fingers in the cage.  The bird may give them a nasty bite.
Now when you feel it is responding in a good way towards you, open cage and see if the bird will come out.  Then procide to put your finger under tummy and say step up.  If it appears it wants to bite you, you may have to use a dowel or some kind of wood perch, and use it to teach it to step up.  If the bird gets on your finger try to avoid letting it climb to your shoulder ( until you can trust your bird not to bite).  Birds like to be high up, so raise your hand higher than your shoulder.  If that isn't working, put your bird on your lap.
There are many ways to work with a bird, and start a bonding with him or her.  Will follow up with more tips at another time.  The main thing is, don't rush your bird, let it have time to adjust.  Also when you put in a new toy, it may act like it's not interested.  So it may take a day or two to get used to a new item in it's cage as well, just either leave it in cage, or clip it outside on the cage for awhile.
